Water Bottle Buying Guide
Your bottle is likely going to be with you for years so it’s important to make the right choice.
Use – As in, how are you going to use it? Will you be taking it to the office or primarily using it for weekend hiking excursions? Do you want a bottle you can run with? Or do you do most of your running on the treadmill at the gym?
If you’ll be using it strictly for hard-core hydration during CrossFit it doesn’t much matter what the bottle looks like. It just needs to hold plenty of water. On the other hand if you’re making it part of your office kit you’ll want something colorful and light.
Material – Most reusable water bottles are plastic and plastic has a lot going for it. It’s durable, usually won’t break if you drop it and is affordable. However, if you never really acquired a taste for drinking out of plastic you may want to go with glass, though you might not want to take your glass bottle running. If keeping your water cold is important you’ll want a stainless steel, double-lined vacuum sealed bottle like the Yeti.
Size and Shape – The larger the volume the heavier the bottle both empty and full. So, if you want a bottle you can take on your walks around Central Park or Castle Island in Boston you’ll probably want to limit it to 22 ounces. If however, your water bottle is going to spend serious time on your desk you can ramp up the volume to your heart’s content. As for shape, you’ll want something that’s easy to hold if you’re taking it on the trail or track. Something like the Thermos Intak 24.
The Cap – The cap is important because it’s the portal through which you interact with your beverage. You don’t want a wide mouth like that on the Nalgene Tritan if you’re running but that would be just fine for water breaks on the trail. If you need to rehydrate on the go you’ll want something with a straw type nozzle or the bite and sip valve like on the Camelbak Eddy. For office use you won’t need anything more than a standard screw cap.
FAQs
I recycle. Why Do I Need a Reusable Water Bottle?
Less than 10% of standard water bottles are actually recycled (2). Even if you put yours in the proper recycling bin the odds are good that it will be floating in the ocean a month from now. And once there it will be part of the seascape for 1,000 years. Your reusable water bottle by contrast will last you many years and will prevent hundreds, perhaps thousands of cheap plastic bottles from being swallowed by whales or washing up on your favorite beach.
Why is Proper Hydration Important?
Proper hydration is not something a lot of people think about. So when they’re experiencing headaches, confusion and fatigue they don’t think to ask themselves “How much water did I drink today?” The 8 glasses of water a day rule is actually a wise one and will help you retain energy, stay alert and maintain an emotional even keel. It will also help your eyes work better and stave off premature aging of your skin.
What is BPA?
BPA (3) is short for Bisphenol A, an industrial chemical that’s been in use for some 50 years in the making of food and beverage containers, particularly water bottles. BPA is considered by many health professionals to present an unacceptable health risk.
They point to studies that suggest it may have an adverse effect on the reproductive systems of both men and women and others that suggest it may affect liver and brain function and aggravate conditions such as asthma. In short you don’t want BPA in your water bottle.
Plastic, Metal or Glass?
Insulated water bottles are almost all made of metal mostly because they need to be in order to create an effective vacuum. When one simply needs a vessel for room temperature water there’s no real need for metal. Some people will still select a metal water bottle because they like the look and feel of it, but for the most part BPA-free plastic (or glass with a protective lining) will typically suffice.
Should I Get a Wide Mouth Water Bottle?
Wide mouth bottles fill faster and you’re also able to take bigger, heartier gulps, which is what you want in some circumstances. Wide mouth bottles are also typically easier to clean which means you can trust that they’ll emerge from the dishwasher ready to go. Whereas with a narrow mouth bottle you may feel the need to wash it by hand.
What’s the Best Water Bottle for Hiking?
The Lifestraw Go wins our backing as best water bottle for hiking. Simply put its filtration system can’t be beat and is a must-have feature for any serious outdoor enthusiast. With parasitic microbes lurking in every picturesque babbling brook you need to have some way to purify the water you pick up short of boiling it. You can bring purification tablets with you or you can just buy the Lifestraw Go and put your mind at rest.
Where do I Get the Water for my Water Bottle?
The answer is simple: from your tap. The fact is at least 25% of commercially available bottled water is municipal water (4) and nothing more. So why pay a premium for something you can get at home? If you’re unsure about drinking tap water then install a quality water filter in your kitchen. They’re affordable and easy to hook up and you’ll have water every bit as pure as what you’ll get from the supermarket.
Conclusion
Reusable water bottles are the healthy, environmentally sound alternative to buying water at the supermarket and any one of the above bottles will serve you well in both the short and long term. Just keep in mind how you plan to use the bottle, how much water you want to be carrying at a given time and the type of valve or nozzle you’ll need. Remember too to get one that’s easy for you to grab a hold of, even when full.
